Narratives are a crucial element of our humanity. Delivered via movies, radio, television and the internet, we are exposed to narratives of all kinds -- epics, tragedies, comedies. Many become parables of modern life that we can use as the beginning of wisdom. These narratives are our chief means of explaining the world to one another and ourselves. My paintings are narratives -- contemporary stories based on personal experience, memory and observation. The foundation that forms the basis of my aesthetic philosophy is the relationship - adult to adult, ego to self, self to the world. I appropriate images from wherever I find them - advertisements, art history, every day life. I examine the prevalent social and psychological experiences of contemporary society and search beyond the obvious for the humourous or the thought provoking. I look for reality and meaning beneath the surface. The goal is to create a narrative that does not just record contemporary life but looks beyond the myth to the mystery within. My stories can be interpreted in various ways but they are, above all, a whimsical search for the meaning of life.
